The museum was founded in 1891 and has continued to receive the
works that were removed from the Cathedral and the Baptistery. Very
important scupltures inside like two “Cantorie” by Luca della Robbia
and Donatello, with also the famous wooden sculpture Magdalene of
Donatello and the Pieta’ by Michelangelo. Medici Riccardi Palace was
built in 1444 by Michelozzo, following models of Brunelleschi. The
most important works consisted in the large hall decorated with the frescoes
of Luca Giordano and in the Chapel frescoed in 1459 by Benozzo
Gozzoli with the Procession of the Magi.

of Palazzo Davanzati and S.S. Apostoli Church.
Meeting point: Piazza Signoria, Equestrian Monument of Duke
CosimoI Medici h. 10:00am. End of the tour 1:00pm
The Palazzo Vecchio was once home to the various Florentine republican
governments (and today to the municipal government). Cosimo I
and his ducal Medici family moved to the palazzo in 1540 and engaged
in massive redecoration. Michelozzo's 1453 courtyard just through the
door was left architecturally intact but frescoed by Vasari with scenes of
Austrian cities to celebrate the 1565 marriage of Francesco de' Medici
and Joanna of Austria. The grand staircase leads up to the Salone dei
Cinquecento and to the Apartments with the Studiolo di Francesco I,
the Quartiere degli Elementi and the Eleonora di Toledo’rooms. The
Palazzo Davanzati, built around the mid-14th century, was purchased in
1578 by the Davanzati family. Its most important feature is the architectural
structure that represents an interesting example of 13th century
home showing the transition stage from the medieval tower house to the
Renaissance building.
Special Invitation
Dr. Pina Ragionieri, the Director of Casa Buonarroti Museum, has invited the participants to visit Casa Buonarroti on Sunday afternoon, after the close of the symposium.
She will be at the museum to welcome and guide the visitors.
